John Miga Leads Dept of NY for 2025-2026

Commander John R. Miga is from Dunkirk and holds honorary life membership with Dunkirk Memorial Post 62. He is also a Sons of the Legion member through his father, Michael, who served in the Army. John was drafted into the US Army in 1966, underwent basic and advanced infantry training at Fort Stewart, GA, and was deployed with the 2nd Armored Division in South Korea, where he participated in DMZ patrols. After completing a 13-month overseas tour, he was transferred to the 46th Medical Detachment at Fort Hood, TX, and was discharged in 1968.

Miga has been involved with the American Legion throughout his life, serving in various roles at Post 62, including commander, adjutant, treasurer, membership chairman, business management, and committee chair. He has also served as commander at the County and District levels and has held positions at both Department and National levels. He graduated from New York State Legion College in 2008 and National American Legion College in 2024. He received an Honorary Lifetime Membership in ANAVICUS (Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada & U.S.) recognizing his service to the American Legion.

As part of his responsibilities, Commander Miga supports programs such as ‘Be The One’ for veteran suicide prevention and the Chautauqua Safety Village, which offers safety training and services for children and the community. He is committed to promoting patriotism across New York State in preparation for the 250th anniversary of independence.

Miga lives in Dunkirk with his wife, Audrey. They have two children and seven grandchildren, all of whom are members of the Legion Family.
